ABOUT THE PLAN

Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Nyack, and the hamlets of Valley Cottage and Upper Grand View have for many years attracted cyclists, hikers, walkers, and other outdoor and cultural enthusiasts from around the region and beyond. Accommodating recreational cyclists and walkers requires careful consideration to respect local communities while offering facilities, on-road and off, that are safe, functional, and inviting. The Greater Nyack Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan presents an opportunity to build on strengths and address deficiencies. It also highlights the vital links between active transportation, public health, and economic development.

From January 2015 to December 2017, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) reported 52 crashes in the school district involving bicyclists or pedestrians. In 2018, as this plan was being prepared, two pedestrians were killed by motorists.

Traffic crashes are preventable.

This plan provides tools and solutions to minimize risks for all street users.

The Master Plan was funded by a grant from the New NY Bridge Project’s Community Benefits Program. The study was administered by the Village of Nyack and conducted by Fitzgerald & Halliday, Inc., a transportation planning and engineering consulting firm, with support from Street Plans, experts in tactical urbanism and quick-build implementation.

The planning process concluded in August 2018. Now is the time to act!
